Our goal is to create a village community where every child reaches their full potential.
A staple within the Durham region and Greater Toronto area; The Ubuntu Village Organization has serviced thousands of youth and their families by creating multifaceted opportunities for community involvement.
ASP initiatives and sports specific club teams were the root of the organization prior to becoming summer-focused in programming. Aimed to propel community development in the Durham region by means of athletics, The Ubuntu Village corp.(Ajax Lions Basketball club) was one of a handful of organizations that provided a home team for hundreds of aspiring student athletes and their families. Not only did this bring visitors to the area by means of large scale tournaments/weekly games, it created a network and social capital that greatly benefited the families of the area.
The evolution of The Ubuntu Village corp. went from housing Elite Teams, weekend House Leagues, to Afterschool Programming, March Break Camps, Summer Camp youth counseling and mentorship programs.
With over 19 years of serving the community pre-pandemic, The Village organization has aided thousands of youth and the community through: mentorship, healthy lifestyle promotion through sports, and creativity by means of arts-based curriculum. Providing job opportunities and volunteer experience for middle school and high school students, our organization has cultivated an environment of growth, integrity and global citizenship throughout the Greater Toronto Area and Durham region.
After School Programming that would entail; homework assistance, tutoring, and physical activity during the critical hours after the standard school day. Bridging the hours that children typically go unattended between school completion and the average work day end.
Club teams that provided high level weekly training and an opportunity to compete on the Ontario Basketball Association circuit. These teams played a pivotal role in assisting more than 50 locals to pursue USport/DI Athletics and studies at the collegiate level in the years to follow.
March Break and Summer Camps that comprise 1-7 weeks of daily scheduled activity. Providing supervision free of cost from 9am-4pm not only gives a structured environment for children of families who may not have been able to afford the luxuries of camps, but has created a network that shares common values, and provides a support system that is accessible to families. A unique opportunity for community development and equity, these camps have a system in place that promotes neighborhood activism. Volunteer opportunities and first-time jobs with advancement openings based on years of service, The Village camps have a blueprint that has made it a pillar within the communities it has aligned with.
Partnering with government youth employment initiatives and school boards in the past, our large-scale camps have a total operating budget of around $100.000. This encompasses; Equipment, Arts & Crafts supplies, Administration paperwork and software, Trips/travel, Snacks/Meals and Miscellaneous supplies. The details of these budgetary items are listed below.
The Village organization has a history of putting forth a high-quality product for the families they serve; people-focus initiatives have always resulted in successful programming.
With future funding, The Village aims to bring these programs back to the growing population of the GTA and Durham region post-pandemic. Not only do they create a unique environment for engagement between families and the youth, it also brings about social capital in an area that is constantly in need for more avenues of diversity, participation, belonging, and safety.
